Adoption

American citizens who wish to learn more about adopting from Nepal may visit http://adoptions.state.gov. The U.S. Department of State’s Intercountry Adoption website includes general information about intercountry adoption from Nepal, as well as special notices. As noted on that website, the U.S. Government suspended processing of intercountry adoption of Nepali children orphaned through abandonment in 2010. Processing of children orphaned through relinquishment was not affected by that suspension. In November 2014, a joint delegation of the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs and the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services visited Nepal to continue the discussion on intercountry adoption between Nepal and the United States. For more information, visit https://travel.state.gov/content/adoptionsabroad/en/country-information/learn-about-a-country/nepal.html.

To contact the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu with specific adoption-related inquiries, please write to adoptionsnepal@state.gov. General questions about intercountry adoption may also be directed to the Department of State’s Office of Children’s Issues at AskCI@state.gov.
