Learn, exchange, grow, and serve. The U.S. Department of State offers many programs for non-U.S. citizens wishing to come to the U.S. for cultural, educational, or professional exchange. These programs are augmented by local opportunities in countries around that world that allow non-U.S. citizens to explore U.S. culture and the English language.
The United States supports international education and welcomes foreign students and exchange visitors. Before applying for a visa, students and exchange visitors must be accepted by their schools or program sponsors.
American English is a resource center for teaching and learning about American English.
Cultural and Professional Exchanges Programs
Exchanges that engage professionals in the government, non-profit, and private sectors; high school students; representatives from the cultural and sports communities; and disenfranchised and underserved audiences.
Brings emerging leaders and professionals to the United States on 13 different cultural exchange programs focused on education, research and skills development. The program allows participants to hone their skills, immerse themselves in American society and culture, connect with Americans, and share their culture with their American host communities.

English Language Fellow Program
Since 1969, American English language teaching professionals have been participating in ten-month exchanges at host-country universities, ministries of education, or other institutions.
The Fulbright Program provides grants for Graduate Students, Scholars and Professionals, and Teachers and Administrators. This site includes Fulbright Commissions and other information on the program.
The Humphrey Fellowships bring mid-level professionals from developing countries to the United States for a year of academic study and professional experiences.
Educational and Cultural Affairs Programs
The Cultural Affairs Section manages a broad range of activities promoting professional, academic, and cultural relations between the people of Nepal and the United States, and it represents the U.S. Embassy vis-a-vis the Government of Nepal in official business related to education and culture. It also organizes and sponsors activities in traditional areas, such as the performing and visual arts, literature, and other cultural initiatives. In addition to administering a large number of short-term educational and cultural exchanges program, the Cultural Affairs Section manages Ambassador Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) program in Nepal. The section is headed by the Cultural Affairs Officer.
The Regional English Language Office (RELO) collaborates with the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Sections in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives. The English Language Office supports the U.S. Fulbright-Hays Act of 1961, which aims to increase communication and mutual understanding between the people of the United States of America and the people of other countries throughout the world.
The Library of Congress, the oldest cultural institution of the United States Government, was founded in 1800 as a government reference library to serve the young nation’s legislature. In the nineteenth century, it grew into a national institution, and since World War II has become an unparalleled library housing print and digital publications from all over the world.
English Access Microscholarship Program
The “Access” program provides a foundation of English language skills to talented high school students from non-elite sectors through after-school classes and intensive summer learning activities.
