Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Kathmandu, Nepal
March 14, 2020

Location:  Nepal Countrywide

Event:  In the context of the spread of COVID-19 internationally and due to the increased likelihood of the Government of Nepal announcing mandatory quarantines or travel restrictions within Nepal itself, U.S. Embassy personnel has been strongly discouraged from undertaking any overnight personal travel throughout Nepal.  Additionally, U.S. Embassy personnel is strongly discouraged from undertaking any personal international travel at this time.

These government implemented quarantines or travel restrictions could be specific to a town, city, district, or region.  Such restrictions have the potential to result in the forced isolation of travelers and prevent the ability of individuals to return home.  The Embassy’s ability to assist in your return could be compromised for an extended period of time.

The U.S. Embassy assesses there is an increased likelihood of the Government of Nepal announcing additional restrictions to all individuals arriving or departing Nepal by air or transiting through Nepal’s borders.  In addition, there is a significantly increased likelihood of similar restrictions by neighboring countries as well.  These restrictions could include mandatory testing, medical certifications, mandatory quarantines, or absolute prohibition on entry, departure, or transit based on nationality or country of origin.

As with all COVID-19 matters, the situation in Nepal is dynamic.  While the Embassy strongly discourages travel for its personnel, personal travel remains an individual decision.  Please make an informed decision fully cognizant of the possibilities and probabilities of further movement restrictions imposed by the Government of Nepal.
