Location:  Nepal Countrywide

Event:  Travel Advisory Elevation to Level Four – Do Not Travel; COVID-19 Response

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice for Nepal due to COVID-19, indicating a very high level of COVID-19 in the country.  Subsequently, on May 10, the State Department elevated the Travel Advisory for Nepal to Level 4 – Do Not Travel.  For further information, please visit the State Department travel webpage for Nepal:  https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Nepal.html.

Currently, regularly scheduled commercial flights departing Nepal are not available.  On May 11, the Government of Nepal (GoN) extended the flight suspension through the night of May 31.  The U.S. Embassy has requested that the GoN permit the operation of charter flights by airlines providing service to the United States.  We are awaiting word of GoN approval for the operation of such flights.

If you have not done so already, U.S. citizens who wish to depart Nepal should register their interest with the Embassy by completing the following online form found at: https://bit.ly/3eUPFC0

If charter flights receive approval to operate, the Embassy will send out information about how one can proceed to book a seat on one of the flights and purchase a charter flight ticket.  Please note that pre-existing return tickets for regularly scheduled flights will likely not be valid for travel on charter flights.  Charter flights will likely require newly purchased tickets specific to that flight.  Please also remember that travelers utilizing charter flights will be required to obtain any necessary PCR tests in order to fly; testing will be at their own time and expense.

The U.S. Embassy will remain closed for routine U.S. citizen services and for all visa services for the duration of the lockdown.  On May 11 the lockdown was extended in the Kathmandu valley until the night of May 27.  In the event of an immediate need for service or an emergency, please email consktm@state.gov to request an emergency appointment.  The Embassy will reopen U.S. citizen services appointments after the lockdown is lifted.
