Medical Emergencies in Nepal

Tourists come to Nepal for some of the most exciting – and potentially dangerous – adventures in the world. Mountain climbing, trekking, whitewater rafting, and the many other outdoor activities available in Nepal can present health and safety problems, including altitude sickness, that can be hard to treat in remote locations. Even more commonly, basic health problems like gastrointestinal ailments affect both tourists and residents. Additional information about health issues in Nepal is provided in the Country Specific Information available at Travel.State.Gov .

Medical Care in Nepal

Medical care in Nepal is limited and often does not meet U.S. standards. Medical facilities are often overwhelmed because of insufficient resources. Emergency medical services, especially in public hospitals, are of poor quality compared to that available in the United States. Illnesses and injuries suffered while trekking in remote areas often require a helicopter rescue. The cost for a helicopter rescue from remote areas to Kathmandu is typically $3,000 to $10,000. The usual travel ailments and minor surgeries can be addressed by clinics in Kathmandu. Serious illness or injury may require evacuation to the nearest adequate medical facility (New Delhi, Bangkok, Singapore, etc) or back to the United States. Medical evacuation to the United States may cost in excess of $50,000. The Embassy strongly recommends that Americans purchase emergency evacuation insurance before any extended trek or adventure activity in Nepal’s remote areas. Learn more at the State Department’s page on supplemental travel insurance with coverage overseas .

How To Find a Doctor in Nepal

Each year, hundreds of American visitors visit a clinic or hospital in Nepal and dozens must be medically evacuated. For a list of medical professionals in Nepal with experience treating U.S. Citizens, please see the detailed list below. Local police or tourism industry professionals would also be able to provide suggestions for nearby medical service providers. Some clinics and hospitals in Kathmandu accept credit card payment, but others accept only cash. Travelers should be prepared to pay their bills in full before treatment begins or before discharge from an in-patient facility. The Embassy strongly urges Americans to consult with their medical insurance company prior to traveling to Nepal to confirm whether their policy applies overseas and will cover emergency expenses.

Embassy Assistance for U.S. Citizens

In addition to providing general information, Embassy Kathmandu can assist Americans with the medical evacuation process and transferring funds from the United States. Consular officers can help ill or injured Americans contact their family or friends back home, understand the local options available to them, and assist with any necessary logistical arrangements for medical care in Nepal. Please note that Medicare generally does not cover treatment overseas and that neither the U.S. Embassy nor the U.S. government pays private medical bills overseas.

Taking Care of Yourself in Nepal

Nepal’s geography and local sanitation concerns make tourists and residents alike susceptible to many ailments. Exercising some simple precautions can help make your trip safe and enjoyable.

Altitude sickness in the Himalayas can affect even the most seasoned climbers and trekkers. Physical training or fitness has little to no impact on altitude sickness susceptibility. Flying directly into high-altitude airports like Lukla or Jomsom brings travelers to high altitudes with no time for their bodies to adjust. In its most severe forms, altitude sickness is a life-threatening problem and must be treated immediately by descending to a lower altitude. Altitude sickness can take three forms: acute mountain sickness (AMS), high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), and high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). Symptoms of AMS include headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and occasionally vomiting. Symptoms may lessen if the affected traveler remains at the same altitude to acclimatize. HACE and HAPE are more severe conditions, marked by lethargy, confusion and/or shortness of breath. Anyone displaying these symptoms should immediately descend to a lower altitude and seek medical assistance.

Diarrhea and other gastrointestinal ailments are probably the most common problems for travelers to Nepal, especially during the summer monsoon months. Diarrhea is rarely life-threatening. However, if symptoms persist, or if you have special health concerns, you should contact a medical professional. To help prevent gastrointestinal problems, use the following rules. Avoid buying food or beverages from street vendors or other unhygienic establishments. Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat and seafood. Avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables unless you have peeled them yourself. Drink bottled carbonated beverages or water that you are sure has been boiled or treated with iodine/chlorine. Be aware that water bottles in remote locations are sometimes refilled with tap or stream water. Make sure the seal on the bottle is intact before you open it.

For more information on health concerns and vaccination recommendations in Nepal, read the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s information on traveling to Nepal .
