The U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu informs U.S. citizens that several traffic chowks in Kathmandu may be blocked on Friday, September 23. Members of the Nepal Communist Party-Maoist may attempt to block the Kalanki Chowk (Zone 7C) and Gongabu Chowk (Bus Park in Zone 1D) from 10:00am-11:00am. These two intersections are located on the northwest and western portions of the Ring Road. These actions may lead to clashes with security forces attempting to keep the intersections open. We advise all parties to avoid these areas.
Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. Avoid large crowds and gatherings. Use good judgment and common sense when traveling. Please do not attempt to drive through any crowd that you might encounter.
On normal working day date(s) within the possible demonstration period, the U.S. Embassy will conduct normal operations. However, travel around Kathmandu may be difficult or impossible for members of the public. The Consular Section is open for emergency American citizen services from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, on normal work days. In the event of an emergency situation after hours, please contact the Embassy and ask for the Duty Officer.
Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
