The U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu informs U.S. citizens that the CPN-Maoist (Biplav) political party has called for a nationwide strike/ bandh on Saturday, March 11, 2017 in protest of the killing of a Nepali citizen allegedly by Indian SSB personnel at the Nepal-India boarder in Ananda Bazar, Kanchanpur (Far Western Region). Planned actions include possible demonstrations, and actions that could result in violence or other disruptions. Confrontations between protesters and motorists could occur, especially at major chowks (intersections). Clashes between protestors and police may occur anywhere within the Kathmandu Valley and greater Nepal.
Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. Avoid large crowds and gatherings. Use good judgment and common sense when traveling. Please do not attempt to drive through any crowd that you might encounter.
March 11 is a Saturday and the U.S. Embassy will be closed for the weekend, resuming normal operations on Monday. Travel around Kathmandu may be difficult for members of the public. The Consular Section is open for emergency American citizen services from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on normal work days. In the event of an emergency situation after hours, please contact the Embassy and ask for the Duty Officer.
